Chris32 Posted October 14, 2007 Report Share Posted October 14, 2007 Hi allMy dad has been messing around trying to download screen savers and has some how managed to download a programme called Registory power Cleaner by Winferno.This has caused lots of problems to his computer, its is now so so slow at everything and it keeps crashing all the time and not responding.I have tried to go into the add/remove programms to try and remove this but its not listed there, and i have gone into the programme files folder and found the Winferno folder, inside that is the uninstall icon, when i click this i get this error message"C/Programme Fils\Winferno\Registory power cleaner\unins000.dat file is corrupted cannot uninstall.Does anyone know another way to get rid of this programme and hopefully restore his computer to normal speed?It is an old dell computer he has that is running Windows XPAny help would be greatly appreciated.Many ThanksChris Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
andsome Posted October 14, 2007 Report Share Posted October 14, 2007 Have you tried to reinstall it and then uninstall what will hopefully be a non corrupted program? Does he not have a backup in a program such as Acronis? Have you tried System Restore to a time before this program was installed?If all else fails, try contacting the companyHERE. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb Posted October 16, 2007 Report Share Posted October 16, 2007 Messing around with so-called "registry cleaners" will almost always lead to problems, and can possibly completely kill a Windows installation.As Andsome suggested, do a system restore to the point before that.Anybody wanting to try any form of "registry cleaning" should always make at least a registry backup (ERUNT), or better, a full system backup. andsome Posted October 16, 2007 Report Share Posted October 16, 2007 The beauty of the registry cleaner in C Cleaner is that you are offered a backup pf changes. After experimenting in the past, it is the only one that I use, and so far I have never had to re-merge the deleted objects. Dencandy Posted October 27, 2007 Report Share Posted October 27, 2007 Hello Chris32, I hope you managed to sort your problem out, but it's not likely to be easy. There's 2 lessons from this: 1. If you let someone else use your computer, set up a Limited User Account for them. That makes it much more difficult for them to accidentally or deliberately make changes to areas like the registry. 2. Never install any new software (unless it comes directly from Windows, for example as an update) without doing a search on the name using your usual search engine. That way you'll find out what the pros say about it. If you can't find any imformation about it, don't install it EVER (as andsome would say).
