ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb Posted October 31, 2007 Report Share Posted October 31, 2007 Both are basically provided by Windows: CHKDSK to check your drives/partitions, and Windows defragmenter for that purpose.If you need more checking on your hard drive(s), check the manufacturer's website for test tools.The Windows defragmenter is very slow, and there are various 3rd-party free and professional tools available. I personally use Diskeeper Home, which is not a free product. Diskeeper does have an older, free product, available from http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1207. Type the name of these 2 products into a search engine and you can read what other say, including professionally done analyses. Ideally, my advice is do this BEFORE buying or installing any software (except for Microsoft updates). Don't just go on the producer's advertising hype. This way you'll help protect yourself from a lot of lousy software that may mess with your systems and also from malware that may be bundled with the software. vitek Posted November 1, 2007 Report Share Posted November 1, 2007 Use Windows Check Disk to check and correct issues on the drive as well as to check for bad sectors and recover data if possible. Then use Diskeeper to defrag the drive. You can also use Diskeeper to optimize your MFT (Master File Table) and defragment if necessary. But the paid version can also defragment the page file, as well as the folders file.
