Tekki Posted November 4, 2007 Report Share Posted November 4, 2007 Hi, it seems I require help with a strange problem I encountered today. I was cleaning my hard drive in preparation for my new computer which I am currently building, when I suddenly noticed that some of my icons simply disappeared for no apparent reason. For example, my run icon. It's no longer showing, in it's place is now a "no icon sign." Here, I took a screen shot to illustrate my problem. Just to make things clear, I do not use ANY programs to alter my desktop's appearance, I merely use a theme file for good ol' regular windows display properties (right click, appearance etc). I know programs like IconPackager can lead to problems, but as I previously stated, I don't use those. The only thing I did between the last time my icons were working and now, is delete some games and useless programs off my main hard drive.I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me, using step-by-step instructions, how to restore my icons back to their former glory.Thank you all for your time and patience. Tekki Posted November 4, 2007 Author Report Share Posted November 4, 2007 I used the add/remove utility to delete games I didn't intend to play with anymore. Then, I deleted the remaining empty folders in C:\program files. That's all I did, and right now, I'm cleaning my registry (I started doing so AFTER the icons were gone, so that's not it). In any case, is there something I could download to put everything back in it's place or something I could do in windows to fix them? Tekki Posted November 4, 2007 Author Report Share Posted November 4, 2007 No I haven't, and honestly, I never had to resort to a system restore before so I wouldn't even know how to do it. What would it do exactly? Would it simply fix the icons or revert everything back to a previous point? Isn't there an easier way to fix them? For example, if I could find out where the icons are stored in Windows, maybe someone could send them to me so that I could put them back where they're supposed to be. doug Posted November 4, 2007 Report Share Posted November 4, 2007 In XP go to Start/all Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore. This will enable you to roll back to an earlier point in time. If this doesn't work you can undo the operation. It should work. Tekki Posted November 4, 2007 Author Report Share Posted November 4, 2007 Well, thanks for all your precious help guys, but I finally found a solution searching on google (in the 20-30 pages). Some guy suggested installing IconPackager (I was highly reticent) to restore the default icons, then uninstalling it. I tried it and it worked like a charm. I guess not all useless programs are...well, useless. So yeah, my problem is fixed. I just wanted to let you know, because you weren't forced to help me, yet you did, and for that I am extremely grateful, regardless of how I fixed my problem.
