Techin Posted November 9, 2007 Report Share Posted November 9, 2007 I have windows XP Pro and I recently installed and uninstalled some trial software and somehow it must have deleted some necessary file for my CD/DVD Drives. My CD-Rom, DVD Drives and my virtual CD Drives all now show "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" I have tried to uninstall and reinstall and reinstall drivers but no change. I would suspect a hardware issue but I have Windows 2000 on a different Hard Drive for safety and troubleshooting purposes and the CD/DVD drives are fine there. If I am missing a file I can replace it from another computer or CAB file but I will need to know which files to look for and check. If the software made a change to the registry on where to find the file I would like to know the relevant registry entries so I can check their paths. Normally I would have tried a restore but in a cleanup of the drive the restore points were lost. Not to swift I realize... but to late now. :( Can someone point me to the relevant files and registry entries? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I have tried that myself some time ago, and failed.If you look at your Device Manager, does the CD/DVD driver look OK, or does it have a yellow exclamation mark? The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" that shows on each CD-ROM entry in the device manager and will not install. I checked the details for the drivers and there is a GEARaspiWDM.sys driver that is not Microsoft’s. I checked the entries for this driver in the registry and the path had been redirected by putting a ? mark where the : should have been. It read C?\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\GEARAspiWDM.sys but even when I changed it to read C:\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\GEARAspiWDM.sys it still didn't correct the problem. I searched and found a GEARaspi.dll entry with the same incorrect path statement. I corrected it as well with still no results. I hope if I can just get this driver removed from my cd-rom drivers it will fix the issue. But I don't know how to do this. Safely Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Techin Posted November 9, 2007 Author Report Share Posted November 9, 2007 Well I finally found the crux of the problem although I am sure there is still some leftover crap in the registry but I found an entry in the system event viewer that referenced a failed load on a file called pxHELP20 and found that it was listed as the high filter while the other file mentioned before was listed as the low filter. I traced it out in the registry and found it had a missing related sys file so I deleted the entries related to pxHELP20 on the high filter (whatever that is) and my CD-ROMs are back... whew... risky move but it worked out.
