Memory, VM, cache, etc...

Since microsoft.com doesn't have that kind of forums lets try here. Hope you can explain these things to me. Or give some link or something.

So first of all what exactly is the system cache and how does it work? What is it used for?

In the advanced performance options - what do the 2 memory usage options exactly do? What effect do they have on performance? How should I set it to minimize disk access?

Why is there pagefile usage when there is plenty of free RAM? What exactly does all the stuff in the performance tab in the task manager mean?

Welcome to the Windows Forum.

First, regarding Microsoft forums (fora?), there are plenty - see http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsg...us/default.aspx to start with a few. They can also be accessed via NNTP clients (Outlook Express, Thunderbird). There are also some additional security forums on a different server (don't have the details with me right now).

Regarding the Performance Options, much depends on your actual specs. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308417 for some initial information.

I didn't know about the newsgroups. Their whole system is really confusing. :)

Then the other stuff. I've seen that link. It says almost nothing really...

I was hoping for something more. For anyone with the proper know-how - don't be shy, go into details and detailed details. Main idea is to learn about that stuff. Then I decide how exactly to adjust stuff, not have some site tell me. :)

"Or give some link or something"

"not have some site tell me."

Which do you require ? The answers that you may get from individuals on a forum can be somewhat out of context to your requirements (almost like picking up a book and starting halfway through)

The only good path to learning and understanding is to start from the beginning.

Here , here!!.

Your attitude does not attract assistance.

You have been attended by seriously dedicated people of this forum.

You do need to do some leg-work yourself, you know!
