B.t.w. we are talking about disk space, not memory - memory is RAM.There is another tool that can graphically show you where your disk space is allocated. It's that the chart should be listing over 50 GB of hard disk space, but it's not. Windows- 8.4 GBFolder Contents 3.2 GBProgram Files 3.0 GBUsers 947 MBAll the other ones are miniscule.On the side, Hidden files - 4Hidden File Bytes 3.2 GB. Mine shows a file of 3.7GB.However, I just looked in the help area fir Unknown, and this is the explanation....If you have activated "Show Unknown" in the Options menu, each drive has an item. The matter is as follows. On the one hand, WinDirStat knows the total capacity of the drive and the free disk space. (These values tally with the number shown by the Windows Explorer properties dialog for the drive.) On the other hand WinDirStat has determined the sizes of all files and added them up. Well, is the difference: Total capacity minus free space minus determined sum. This rest can be greater than zero by serveral reasons. For instance there can be directories (e.g. "System Volume Information") with read-access denied. Their size cannot be included in the sum calculated by WinDirStat. In the treemap, the item is colored vivid yellow.Also....On my XP WinDirStat shows more than a GB , what's wrong?Nothing. XP quite often creates rather big 'System restore points' under C:\System Volume Information, but denies access to it.It looks as if it may be stored 'Restore Points'.What do you think, Pat? System Restore files will have grown in size as you unstalled new software - you can limit the maximum amount SR takes (up to 12% of your total C: drive as default) by the slider in System Restore/Settings.As I said previously - XP by default will take up to 12% of your drive - see above.
