I recently bought a USB TO IDE cable and seperate power pack plugged it in and it worked a treat, I have a few old H/Drives lying around so I backed up some files on them as you do. I always remove them using the icon on the task bar but my computer hung up for some reason a while ago and since then when I plug the usb in it doesn't recognise the drives any more, anone got any ideas? Thanks and a Happy New Year to you all. Neil

I have some of these IDE to USB converters and they are EXTREMELY sensitive to being misused. It is vital when disconnecting to use the correct procedure (as you are doing) but they are also susceptible to computer errors, possibly like your computer hanging. I had a converter die on me when, for an unknown reason, my computer froze and I had to do a restart. It was impossible in those circumstances to use the correct unplugging procedure and consequently the adapter died on me.

Fortunately, these units are quite cheap and there is no need to buy a new power brick each time so, the best thing I can suggest is to buy a new converter.
