fishquail Posted January 3, 2008 Report Share Posted January 3, 2008 My new computer was working flawlessly until i came back from Xmas break and now - nothing is working. When i first start windows it seems fine. Can open drives, and view files, but then after a minute... 1. Windows explorer freezes up, so i push < CTRL+ALT+DEL > for task manager and it says "not responding". If i Click end task, it makes the task bar disapear but will not end task. 2. Hovering the mouse over the start button shows an hour glass. will not click. 3. Will not shut down/restart. (from Task manager or start button) have to manually push button on tower. What ive tried:Did system restore from safe mode to before the problem started - but still having this issue:Run all kinds of virus checks, including pulling drive out and running one on another computer. What could this possibly be??? Could some kind of hardware burned out? This is a new system build as of December. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
-pops- Posted January 3, 2008 Report Share Posted January 3, 2008 This is a new system build as of December.Is this a commercial build or DIY?If commercial, you would be best contacting the manufacturer.If home build, the easiest thing to try, initially, would be to re-install the operating system - or, if you have one, reinstall from backup. If you don't have a full system backup, I strongly suggest when you are up and running again that you prepare one.Please let us know and someone will try and help further. fishquail Posted January 3, 2008 Author Report Share Posted January 3, 2008 Yes, this is a DIY. I am posting this hopeing not to have to do a full reinstal of OS. -pops- Posted January 3, 2008 Report Share Posted January 3, 2008 It may be faulty RAM. How many sticks do you have? If more than one, take some out leaving just one in position. If it still behaves the same way, swap that stick for another (but still keep only one stick in place).Take out all the peripherals, including the hard drive and added hardware cards (except the graphics card, of course). Check that the machine boots OK. Leave it running in this state for a while. Shut down and install the hard drive. If it's OK, shut down and install the next item (CD/DVD drive). fishquail Posted January 3, 2008 Author Report Share Posted January 3, 2008 I was able to instal and run Passmark BurnInTest. The test ran and showed no errors in my hardware. Overnight last night i also ran Memtest 38 and after about 6 hours it reported no memory errors.I have also tried using the winxp cd to do an instal over the existing instalation (which keeps your apps and setting intact but re-instal windows) still no luck.
