Ksawery Posted January 9, 2008 Report Share Posted January 9, 2008 Hello,I hope you can help me here ppl, because you have proved that you are wise.So, when I put my Pendrive into the USB port of my laptop nothing happens. I mean, you can notice the icon in the systray with which you can safely remove the device.By when I open My Computer I can't see the Pendrive icon that used to pop up after I inserted the Pendrive.BTW, when I click on the icon in the task bar (like I would do back in the days to remove the device) the is a not very well looking icon.I am running Win XP Pro SP3CR.Help pls! -pops- Posted January 9, 2008 Report Share Posted January 9, 2008 I think the problem you have is due to you at some time removed the Pendrive by unplugging without going through the correct procedure of using the Safely remove hardware facility.If you hot-unplug a USB drive before it is ready to be removed, very often the drive is still carrying out some function (even though this may not be obvious) and in this way the drive, and sometimes the USB port is damaged and is not recognised by your operating system - hence the yellow exclamation mark in your picture and no matching drive visible in My Computer. -pops- Posted January 9, 2008 Report Share Posted January 9, 2008 It is not possible to repair the drive so a replacement is necessary but check in another computer first to confirm it is the drive that is broken. It may be the USB port itself that is damaged in which case a dealer repair is required.BTW, my PC is a laptop. do you think that could really happen with 3 USB ports at once? i have one at the side (i use it the most often for pendrives and stuff) and 2 at the back. One of the two at the back is being used for my mouse and it works fine. when i plug the pendrive there the thing dosent work, so i guess it is not the USB port, but some kind of software-hardware issue. win xp detects the pendrive (icon in the taskbar) but cant id the thing as a 'disk drive'... anyway, i think of myself as a rather experienced computer user, and it seems so weird to me too.
