Speed Fan Questions

I have a Vista computer with a Q6600 processor, ASUS P5KC Mobo and Antec P182 case. I have Speedfan installed plus the third party Vista sidebar gadget called Speedfan Meter.

My Antec case came with three 120 mm dia quiet case fans connected to the PSU via 3 speed in-line control switches - they are not connected to the Mobo and can only be speed controlled manually - mine are set to the middle position where the fans are whisper quiet but still move plenty of air.

I have a Zalman cpu heat sink and cooler which is connected to the mobo.

Question 1

Speedfan shows an AUX temperature of 119C. I presume this is a false reading resulting from the fact that my case fans are not connected to the mobo - but what does AUX normally represent - the temperature of what? Also what does the SYS temperature represent.

Question 2

I would like to test my system and cpu temperatures when running the cpu at 100% load for a considerable time. Is there any simple freeware that will do this - or is there a trick available using software already on the computer - like Office, Vista, etc

Question 3

Do my temperatures look reasonable in the screen shot below?

Phantom readings.

Speedfan gets its readings directly from the monitoring chip and not filtered through the bios. As a result it reports all the readings that the chip is capable of regardless of whether there is a sensor there or not. Just open the config settings and uncheck those readings.

You could also try running another temp monitor tool like Pcwizard2008, CoreTemp, Everest, probably even a utility that came with your motherboard (Asus Probe???)

I f the temps are measured correct, your temps are ok, I think. I got around 33°c on my quad6600 with 100%cpu load, running folding @home. This puter is watercooled. Room temp is 22°C

To stress your pc, folding@home is good and you are helping science with it :flowers:

Also prime2004 is used to stress your cpu

After playing with Prime 2004 I found that it only pressure tested cores 0 and 1. I found a link via google to set it up to run two copies - the second being configured for cores 2 and 3. It was a bit of a chore each time you wanted to use it - but worked fine once it was set.

I then found on an overclockers forum a reference to the latest version of Prime 95 which now support 4 cores - I downloaded it and it proved to be much easier for me to use.

I have been running the torture test for 3 hours and the highest core temperature reached was 41C on core 0 - which I am happy with. Core 0 is permanently about 5C higher than the other three - whether it is due to it being loaded more or the cooling is not as good in that area I know not.

I was aware before I bought the Antec case that the fans were not designed for connection to the mobo because a friend has the same set up bought a few months ago. He chucked out the antec fans and replaced them with 3 wire jobs connected to the mobo - but finds that the speeds hardly ever vary and he now considers it a waste of effort. Hence I decided to stick with the Antec standard which works fine.

I would still welcome advice on the source of the temperature signal for the AUX and SYS references in Speed Fan.

system is probably the case temp, and the AUX reading is probably a phantom reading like gagaman said.

you can try to upload your mobo data with the included tool (under the info tab), if you`ve got an account on the speedfan website, you can download the seperate code for your mobo, which should be more accurate.

your temps on prime are good indeed.

There has been a development which has left me a bit concerned. I downloaded the new beta version of Speedfan and ran them both side-by-side. The beta version gives temperature readings 15C higher than version 4.33. I then downloaded and ran a programme called Core Temp - this tends to agree with the beta version of Speedfan.

Here are screen shots of the 3 programmes with the computer idling - CPU at 15% . See next post for screenshot of temps at full load.

I did the test you did on my puter. Also a significant difference...

Don't know really which is right... The new speedfan is beta so, there could be some glitches. On the other hand, pcwizard 2008 confirms these temps... :huh:

EDIT: nevertheless, none of these temps should be very worrying. Depending on which core stepping you have, max. temps for the Q6600 are 71°C (GO stepping) or 62.2°C(B3 stepping). According to your coretemp information, you have a GO stepping.

Speedfan is off by 15C for C2Q's, I'm not actually sure why. You can create a 15 degree offset manually in the configuration, or you can use a program like CoreTemp. I discovered it when my air-cooled, overclocked Q6600 was running about 10F cooler than room temperature B)

Thanks for the confirmation - like you I eventually came to the conclusion that Speedfan was 15 degrees out on my computer and set the offset accordingly. I too have Coretemp om my computer but prefer Speedfan because I have a sidebar gadget in Vista that continually displays the selected Speedfan data. Coretemp displays the info it in the task bar - but the text colours are unfortunate and do not show too clearly.
