RebeccaRS Posted February 23, 2008 Report Share Posted February 23, 2008 I keep getting this error "Data Execution Prevention/To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program./Name: Generic Host Process for Win32 Services". if I click Close Message I get "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services encountered a problem and needed to close" .... I googled this and applied the Microsoft hotfix (Several times and restarted several times) but it did not solve my problem. The message never goes away and always pops up again. System restore doesn't seem to work at all! My system has slowed down a lot. For example, it takes forever for "My Computer" window to load. Also startup and shut down are slow and sometimes freeze. It is frustrating that the hotfix for this exact problem does not work! I have seen similar posts on forums, but have never seen a solution. Any new thoughts out there?? Make sure your anti-virus definitions are up to date, then do a complete scan of your computer.Also download an anti-Spyware / Malware program and give it a full scan with that.Report back when you have done it all. If you are not quite sure how to do this I have given a link to a website. I have chosen this particular website because it explains the practice for several operating systems and you have not mentioned what yours is. (I suspect you are using Windows XP) *** USING SAFE MODE *** Some of the things that we put on our computers to protect us from "nasties" such as viruses, trojans, and all the other junk actually end up slowing our computers right up. Unfortunately one of the products that has a very bad reputation for doing this is Norton. I do seem to remember reading somewhere that several people had issues with Norton and System Restore.It might be worth a try to uninstall Norton 360 completely and see if your computer regains it's previous speed. (Control Panel - Add / Remove Programs)If you do this as a test, please remember not to go online as you will be completely without protection.Some of the other things that you could do are: Defrag, Disk Cleanup, run chkdsk, and remove any unwanted programs that you do not use anymore. All of this is usable from within Windows. If you are not quite sure how to use any particular option, enter it on Google for an explanation.Do a good cleanup operation with *** EASY CLEANER *** (Free !)When using this product it is as well not to click on "Duplicates" everything else is safe for the novice user.Hope all goes good and your computer becomes well again soon. :D Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
