As I mentioned earlier, killing the svchost thread does not solve the problem; you have to find out what is using svchost.

including McAfee® VirusScan®, McAfee® Personal

Firewall Plus, McAfee® Privacy Service, and

So we cannot say if you have the McAfee Personal Firewall installed and active. Try to find out, and disable/uninstall it.

yes i do have the mcaffe personal firewall installed

but would the vista firewall really be better than the mcaffe?

can i find out what is using svchost from the TID number?

or do i have to manually go through every process one by one

I cannot tell you which firewall is better; all I can tell you is to disable one or the other. The conflicting firewalls may as well be the source of your problem.

I just remembered another method of identifying what processes use specific instances of svchost; see this post. Then just kill each process using that particular svchost process. When CPU usage goes back to normal, then you know which one caused it.

i have found the list of what is runnign under that svchost (PID 1056) with tasklist/svc

this is what i have

now i will restart , and when the cpu problem comes back i should see an extra svc under this host right?

if not then i will just go one by one like you said untill i find the problematic process

also i remember now that when i bought this computer the mcafee firewall was the default, later on i noticed that my windows firewall kept saying that my computer was not proctected so i turned it on, not realizing that i had two firewalls going

( i thought mcaffe was just configuring my vista firewall, )

now i have turned off the standard vista firewall and am relying on mcaffe

Windows should be able to recognize most 3rd-party firewalls, and only warn if it does not detect any firewall at all. But as I have mentioned earlier, McAfee is not an original firewall company, so maybe Vista doesn't know that there is a firewall.

well i have finally made it back into my windows partition

but unfortunately i was not able to figure out where this problem is coming from

i have gone through the list turning them off one by one and nothing has dropped the cpu usage

there were however a few that i was not able to stop like

wudfsvc (Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework)

error message - The operation could not be completed. The requested control is not valid for this service

WdiSystemHost (Diagnostic System Host)

no error message but it comes back on as soon as i turn it off

IPBusEnum (PnP-X IP Bus Enumerator)

error message - The operation could not be completed. A stop control has been sent to a service that other running services are dependent on.

EMDMgmt (ReadyBoost)

error message - The operation could not be completed. The service cannot accept control messages at this time.

AudioEndpointBuilder (Windows Audio Endpoint Builder)

error message - The operation could not be completed. A stop control has been sent to a service that other running services are dependent on.

Got any ideas?

back in the process explorer while examining the threads that this svchost is using, i have discovered that there is a start address for all of the threads

the start adress for this problem thread is emdmgmt.dll+0x 146d

now that i have identified the service

EMDMgmt (ReadyBoost)

how can i fix it?

i am not using any flash drive at all and i never have

i have no removable storage! besides dvd's

how could readyboost get on in the first place if i dont use a flash drive?

how do i turn it off?

Can you try to turn it off (disable) from the Services Manager?

i guess i should have googled it

but this still doesn't answer how this could have gotten turned on in the first place (considering i have never used any flash memory with this computer)

anyway it doesn't really matter, i was just curious.

(Im just glad that it is fixed now and my cpu usage is back down to an ordinary rate)

Does anybody know what would be the expected memory usage on a laptop with 1 GB of DDR2 Dual Channel and a 1.46GHz Dual core processor?

(because mine is using about 700MB at idle) is this normal?

The reason i ask is because even after the cpu usage dropped back to normal my vista is still about three times slower than ubuntu gutsy 64bit with full compiz fusion effects!
