Maggie's Service Economy

I have just received a short note from the company that handles my company pension.

It said that, in the interest of reducing the amount of paper that is used, henceforth I would only get a "payslip" if the amount paid varied by "X".

I can understand their point of view very well. The paper they are interested in saving is obviously the stamp on the envelope and the paper used for the cheque with which they pay the girl who despatches (or despatched) them every month.

This 'modern progressive move' reinforces what La Belle Thatcher had in mind when she talked about Service Economy.. There is no way of avoiding the evidence of the economy of every sort of service in today's once Great Britain.
