kareandy Posted March 3, 2008 Report Share Posted March 3, 2008 hope someone can clear this up for me i have just bought (1gb ddr) memory from ebay but when installed on my computer it only shows up as 512mb i am assured by the seller that this is 1gb and that my computer must not be compatable with memory but surely if this was not compatable my computer would not run but it does run fine with only this memory installed ,the seller is now saying that my computer must be "low density" and this memory is "high density" when i put my own 512 mb memory in together with this new one my system is showing 959mb ram is this new "1gb" ram actually working in my machine at 512mb???? idid have 512mb and 256mb installed before but with my new memory installed it says i have 2x 512mb ram but i dont seem to notice any difference with my computers performance hope someone can p[lease help this confused newbie many thanks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

This should give you the information to allow you to determine compatibility.If you do not have one, the details can be found by just entering you MB model number on Google and a number of sources of the information will be displayed. And the so-called "high-density" modules that you've gotten actually have a lot more pieces of IC than is supported by your motherboard. These cheapies have "stacked" IC chips (the eight little chips on each side of the memory module), so that they actually contain 16 pieces of IC per row (line/bank/rank/side). This is the result of those eBay modules using x4 (4-bit) IC chips (e.g. 64Mx4), which no Intel or NVIDIA chipset memory controller supports! You must use memory modules containing x8/8-bit IC chips (or single-sided memory modules with x16/16-bit IC chips) for your motherboard. (In other words, don't trust eBay for your memory purchase.)And Intel and NVIDIA chipsets do not support the use of memory modules with more than eight pieces of IC per row. Those cheap memory modules, as it turned out, are only compatible with certain VIA and SiS chipsets which predate the Athlon 64 age, so your 1gb will only show up as 512mbAlways buy low density memory.
