dial up connection

I have retired to Costa Rica from the US and have a dial up connection. I have trying to get a high speed connection which they consider ISDN (called RDSI here) or ADSL. I have been told here by my ISP that my house is too far from the central office to get this conection. I have a US Robotics V.92 fax Int modem.

My speed is almost always between 48 & 50.6 but at times I will get a connection speed of 115.2 or 230.4. I have been told here that this is IMPOSSIBLE, and I must admit that I do not understand how this happens. I have no routers or splitters set up. When this happens my internet speed is MUCH faster.

If I log off the net & log back on the speed will once again be between 48 and 50.6.

Can anyone out there tell me how this is happening, and what I could do to get this higher connecrtion speed ALL the time ?

If I do set up a router with a splitter will I get this high connection all the time ?

I can not explain it. But, I can give you some advice.

Keep quiet about it, or someone will either come and stop it, or, more likely, find a way of charging you more money for it.

Now that is interesting, maybe the ISP is just trying to compensate for having lack of broadband? But I would of thought its impossible to get anything above 50kbps because of the lacking bandwidth of phone connections.

The higher speeds is due to the computer screwing up when it looks for the speed, instead of reading the speed of the actual internet connection, its reading the speed that the modem is communicating with the computer. So while the dialup connection will never go above 53.3kbps, the reported speed could go as high as 230kbps (the max speed for a serial port connection, which although they most often connect via PCI, modems are basically just serial devices.)

The extra speed your seeing may be just because the pages you're going to are already cached and so feels faster, but the connection between you and your ISP is not any faster.

felicidad, make some enquiries about the new high-speed data cards which plug into a usb port and link to the Internet via mobile telephone networks. We've got them here in Sri Lanka and although I haven't got one yet (because my ADSL connection is reasonably satisfactory) I'll probably upgrade to one soon. Dealers claim they have a top download speed of 7.2 Mbps. There's 2 grades available here: 3G and 3.5G.
