computer won't boot up

please help, my PC won't start except in safe mode, i have tried restore but this is not helping, it will go as far as the windows xp screen but then just stops and the screen goes blank, not sure what else to try. :( :(

You can run CheckDisk in Safe Mode. This will check your hard disk for problems and replace any Windows files which are on corrupted disk sectors. However, before you run it try to save on CDs or a flash drive any important data that may be on the computer.

To run Error-checking, right click on My Computer; click on Properties, then on Tools. You'll see an item called Error-checking, so click on that. Tick both boxes to check all sectors and automatically replace any faulty ones.

Log off and shut down, then restart in Safe Mode again. Error checking should then begin; it may take anything up to 45 minutes.

If Error-checking doesn't run it's likely to be because the hard disk is so badly damaged that even Error-checking can't be carried out.

How old is your hard disk? If it's more than 7 years it will be getting close to the end of it's life.

I will be away for at least a week & can give no more advice till I return. Post back here what happens rawli5 and someone else should continue with advice.

Did it ever start correctly before, and if so, what did you do before it stopped?

I had a similar situation on one of my computers after I installed COMODO 3. I had to uninstall it in Safe Mode, and Windows would start normally.
