USB to IDE possible?

Recommended Posts

So I have a ultra portable laptop which has a HDD (broken) I can't exactly afford a new one so I'm thinking 4GB USB Flash drive would be brilliant if I could get it internally, no more noise and a better chance at living longer depending on the flash drive.

So I'm googlin' USB to IDE/IDE to USB can't find anything I am sure I've seen this done before only on a desktop PC, which has different width.

can anyone point me in the right direction?

My bad I remember now, it was a Hak5 show talking about FreeNAS I tried to find the show couldn't so I loaded freenas knowledge base and there it was boot from a compact flash card!!

Depending if it supports MicroDrive it would allow me to get upto 8GB storage capacity, which is more than enough to boot up linux.

Most USB -> IDE converters come with an adapter for both sizes of IDE drive.

I think your problem will be getting the computer to boot from USB. Unless the BIOS has legacy USB, that function is not operative until Windows has loaded.
