shokan Posted May 2, 2008 Report Share Posted May 2, 2008 I have IE7 and run XP.Suddenly a few days ago, I began getting "there is a problem with this site's security certificate" for Hotmail and other sites. I simultaneously began getting the "new programs installed" balloon at the Start menu. This may or may not be related. The balloon disappears when I highlight my program list and re-appears when I open Google. As I say, the new programs balloon may not be related to the certificate problem. I have not disabled the balloon yet, pending more digging around about the cause. For the certificate problem, it was suggested I reset time and date. I was surprised to discover my date was several days behind despite it having been correct a few days previously. I also reset under Advanced in Internet Properties. The date reset and the reset defaults cured the certificate problem for Hotmail, but not other sites, such as a Canada Government site for standard income reporting which never showed certificate notice before. I ran a system virus/spyware scan that resulted in only tracking cookies, which I deleted. I also did System Restore to a point previous to the problem. Neither action helped. Any ideas? BTW, I was not poking around and making changes to IE or Windows when this incident occured. Task Manager shows the correct programs running. Under processes, I do not know enough to tell what might be unwelcome in the list.PS: several hours later, HOTMAIL is again bringing up "problem with this site's security certificate" and this after working OK for several hours. I corrected the month and day first time but didn't check the year. When I later tried opening a trial software, it alerted me I could not because my PC date was changed. I went back into Date and Time, and saw the year was 2006. Once corrected, both the certificate problem and the balloon problem disappeared. Question is: how the heck did the date and time get changed in the first place. It certainly wasn't me, and no one else uses this computer. I thought the new battery suggestion was a joke, but I read online that there is an onboard battery that can get low. How else would the clock run? Duh! But, would that account for a whole two year sudden lag back to 2006? I know it was correct when I got the machine. Any ideas? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Also there are few apps for this purpose (if your battery has gone dead and this tool synchronizes with Time Servers across the world for you on every restart.
