naked woman with machinegun

Hi folks can you help me with my foolishness? I downloaded a picture of a naked woman with a machinegun as the desktop image on a friend's computer by right-clicking image and choosing the SET AS BACKGROUND command.

Oops -my now possibly ex-friend didn't think it funny AT ALL and wants the image off their computer. I can sucessfully change the desktop image to Microsoft's own Autumn -my friends original choice -but cannot work out how to remove the offending image entirely from computer. I have searched all images on computer including folder containing the standard desktop images but can not find the image anywhere to delete it. Any ideas on how I can do this and thus redeem myself?

What file types did you search for? Most likely the image was saved as a BMP file; search for *.BMP files.

Thank you Pat for your reply. Sorry to have such a dicky query when most stuff discussed here is so high-tec.

like you said I did search of bitmap images to no avail -also searched ALL images on computer -still nothing.

I used Tools in Internet Explorer to delete temporary history. No luck. I did a disc clean up deleting temp files -no joy there.

I can tell you that the image is called Internet Explorer Wallpaper, and just bloody sits there in the 'backgrounds' window of the desktop background display window. It is not in C:\WINDOWS\Web\Wallpaper where you might expect it to be. How can an image get lost like this? It must be in a folder somewhere. I fear my karma is punishing me! Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you Seshomaru Samma for your suggestion but this pesky gal and her weapon are not there. Instead they taunt me from the desktop background window in Display. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. Oh how I wish now I had not invited this warrior woman onto my friends computer!

How embarrassing for you! Unfortunately, by Setting as the Background you've now probably stored a copy of it in one of Windows' normally hidden files.

You say you know the name of the image, so which menu exactly do you see it on? Is it Desktop or Screen Saver? Whichever, you should see the name it's filed under on that menu. Did you do a Search (All files and folders) on that name? Remember to show all hidden files. If it comes up use a secure deleter to wipe it (CCleaner can be set to do this).

Also you can try this:

Go to Control Panel, Category View. Click on Appearance and Themes> Change the Computer's Theme. Select browse. That should enable you to see all possible folders where images that could be used as themes or backgrounds are stored. Go through them all (beware, you might find some others that will embarrass you or your friend!) and delete the one(s) that you want to get rid off. Use a secure deleter to be sure.

If it's not there repeat the same procedure on the Appearance and Themes menu with: Change the Desktop Background, Choose a Screen Saver, and Display, using browse each time to search for images.

Thank you dencandy for your spiritual and technical advice. I tried all you suggested but the image is still there.

The image is in a list of images for DESKTOP backgrounds and is called Internet Explorer Wallpaper. It appears in the preview box when I click on it. The background images are all standard Windows images. My friend has never added to them and is using one called Autumn right now. I replaced my silly picture with iAutumn but my friend wants to remove the offending picture from his computer entirely.

Now these background images are either jpegs and bitmaps. The jpegs are ALL in C:\WINDOWS\Web\Wallpaper folder. The bitmap images are ALL scattered alphabetically through the C:\WINDOWS folder.

My image, a bitmap image, is in neither of these folders nor it seems on any other folder on the computer.

You say that by downloading the image as SET AS BACKGROUND I have placed it in a hidden folder. If you have the time could you explain this a bit more as I have tried multiple searches with the hidden files box ticked but still can not find the image.

It is truly confounding. How can this image appear as a thumbnail in the DESKTOP background preview box but not appear as an image on a folder somewhere on the computer? How can that be possible? If anyone out there has any suggestions i would be most grateful.

praise be! Thank you dencandy but i worked it out with a compromise that my friend can live with. In Help I found out that everytime i use the SET AS BACKGROUND option the new image takes the place of the old one! So i found another beautiful autumn image online and it wipes out/replaces the woman with the gun. Now my friend has 2 autumn pictures to choose from!

Oh, well done! I'm sure you've now obliterated the last remaining copy of that troublesome picture as I'm pretty sure that it was only a thumnail left in the folder rather than a full size image. If a full size image had still been there after all you had done previously to delete it, I'm sure you've now got rid of it for good. I'm sure your karma is now back in balance (because you've just spent a few days "in hell"!) and I hope it stays that way for you. Many of us on this forum have done equally foolish things in the past, I'm sure.
