SATA HD query

Recommended Posts

In persuit of the cure to the speed test problem outlined in :-

http://forums.windowsforum.org/index.php?s...mp;#entry265796

I replaced the HD with a new one. The old one was a SATA and so is the new one.

My original notion was to put in the new one as an experiment to see if the problem was, as I suspected, a quirky installation of Ubuntu 8. I suspected the inability to use the speed testing sites was all down to a duff installation of Flash.

So I put in the new HD and downloaded and installed a new copy of Ubuntu 8 and it seems to have worked. With a new installation of Flash I can use the speed test sites and one or two other oddities have been cured. The whole OS is much better than before and the printer scanner was picked up and "just ran".

Now due to the fact that the old installation of Ubuntu 8 would not recognise my Ext. HD I could not make a back up of anything, but I was thinking that if the new drive and OS installation cured everything I would put my old HD back in, as "slave", and copy some odds and ends from it. I have just realised that on the back of the HD that came out, whilst there are what appear to be normal jumper pins, there are no indications of which pins are for what nor is there a jumper.

So my questions are these

1 Can I do what I wanted to do and read from one to the other?

2 Are the jumper pins set out in a standard manner on SATA drives (if these pins are what they look like)?

3 What is this standard manner (if it exists)?

What brand is your drive? For WD go to http://www.wdc.com/en/library/eide/2579-001037.pdf for info.

For Seagate or Maxtor go to http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?loca...000dd04090aRCRD

Thanks pops.

It an Hitachi so I will see if I can find something on there site...presumably they will have one.
