Program selection query

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if some setting has changed on my PC as I can no longer select the option 'Always use the selected program to open this type of file' as it is now blanked out

This means that every time I want to play a video file (taken from YouTube) I have to select the VLC player manually and it's rather annoying!

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks.

Not to worry as I've just realised that the option is available but only to recognised Windows files (and because VLC is third party, it isn't recognised)

I don't think your problem has to do with "recognised Windows files" rather than 3rd party applications - take a look at my "Open With"

Thanks for replying.

With my memory being so bad I can't remember if that option was ghosted out before so I just assumed it was.

When I select a WMV video file then the option is available so I just assumed it was me.

I'm not sure if it's possible to correct the problem and in any case I've found a way round the problem which is to create a VLC playlist!

p.s. I've noticed that your file is an avi file (as shown in your screenshot) but mine doesn't come up as any valid file.

I used http://keepvid.com/ to download it from YouTube if that makes a difference?

There is no file info when I go to properties - it just says 'File'
