Guest moon
I need to remove XP Home and install Windows 2K. Can someone talk me through it ?
Guest Nellie2
Well while you are waiting Moon I suggest you put all your documents and favourites and anything else you don't want to lose onto a CD because I don't think you will be able to install 2k over the top of XP......... in fact I am sure you can't. Think you are going to have to do a format and install.
Guest moon
No worries, nell, it's a new machine so nothing to lose. I reformatted and installed 2K. Bye, bye XP Home. :)
Guest Nellie2
Tell me Moon, I'm curious. Why do you prefer 2K over XP???
Guest moon
To be frank, nell, I know little of XP. The machine came with XP Home without a full CD install, just a recovery disc, and the effin OS wouldn't do as it was told. Looking for reasons why online it seems that everyone and his dog is complaining about XP Home ( of XP Pro I know nothing) so I thought I'd speed things up and load 2K ( which I've never used as yet, being a long-term 98SE enthusiast) 2K loaded easily, configured easily and did as it was told. I can also rip the guts out of the machine now, without phoning Bill. What I saw of XP seemed like a Disney version of an OS with too much emphasis on 'ease of use' and all the tools I'm used to either well-hidden or not there. For example, I had to search Google in order to make a Startup floppy and when I did I couldn't format from it. It feels like what it is; an intermediate OS between genuine user control ( 9x & 2K) and Fritzware. Fortunately, it appears that the larger proportion of corporate users have shunned it in favour of earlier Windows configurations and Linux so perhaps the march towards .Net, Fritzchips and other planned invasions of privacy might be slowed. I hope so.
Guest Nellie2
Hmmmmm...thanks for that!!!! If you wanted to rip the guts out of the machine why didn't you just build your own then you wouldn't be paying for an os that you didn't want!! Guest moon
I won the machine , nell, from BT Community Connections. You just need to write some stuff about why your community group ( in my case, a conservation society) needs a PC and they lob one in your direction. :D

Guest moon
Couldn't do it , powerless, as I couldn't save XP. I understand that to dual boot I'd have to load 2K first ? I'll give it a go when XP Pro comes my way. I'm just not interested in XP Home after seeing the bad crits.
