Albert Wesker
hello, recently something happened to my PC. i disconnected a usb drive, and my comp froze up. i left it on to figure itself out, but after about a halfhour there was an electrical smell, and my power supply has a faint high pitch ringing coming from it. i turned it off and then it wouldnt start. when i flipped the switch in the back, no small spinning of my fans, nothing.....after a day the small spin started, so i turned my PC on. POST has no problems, but when i get to the "windows has quit unexpectedly...." screen it constatly restarts no matter what the choice.i formated my harddrive. when i go to install windows again, the install loading screen loads all the dlls and such, but when it is about to show my partitions and such, it restarts and loads from the CD again.ive tried DVDs, CDs, Floppies. doesnt matter.any input would be greatly appreciated
Sbrideau
Hi and welcome to those forums :).I don't know much about those things, but it seems to me that your PSU is dead...Better wait for someone that knows.
Albert Wesker
i thought so too, usually the rear fan kicks in 24/7 but it doesn't now.it sounds possible for the PSU to be the problem, but if that were the case, would it even turn on? Dencandy
Albert Wesker, I think if you've had electical smells something has burnt out in your computer and you're best not switching it on till you've had someone check all the inner workings and connections - unless you know how to do that yourself. -pops-
The inner workings of PSUs are best left unknown. There is little or nothing repairable inside and opening them can expose dangerously high voltages and capacitors that can deliver a hefty whack - for some time after the device was last powered up as well.It is quite feasible that a PSU can partially break down with, say the 5V line working and the 12V not - or the other way round. Either way, the PSU would fail to deliver and is effectively dead. Not wishing to be the bearer of bad news but PSU burnouts can sometimes feed uncontrolled power into their output and, in turn, burn other components of the machine. This is exceptional but be prepared for it.The thing to do is replace the PSU - ideally with one more powerful than the original (if that came pre-installed with the case).
