windows could not start because the following file is missing?

i have vista oprating system dual boot with xp,they where working fine ,recently i have tried to shrink one partion using vista shrink tool but i found it useless,then i tried GParted shrink tool.

i figured out that xp dualboot could not started because the following file is missing or corrupt:

<windows root>system32\hal.dll.

please re-install a copy of the above file.

i tried to search this at microsoft knowledge base but non of theose could help me.

anyone can help me recover this file as i have important file in windows xp

hi again,first ,thank you Irene for replying,i have tried all but non of those could help me, what i did is ,i have used shrink tool build in Vista oprating system to expand the partion i have created by GParted,and then reboot the system.

finally after hard time ,i can now boot into xp oprating system dualboot with Vista.

As this post is a month old, but it has helped me.

I get it working with

a repair installation of Windows XP. This installation replaced missing or corrupt files.
