Problems starting up friends computer

Hi, I went over to my neighbors house because he was having problems starting up his computer. So I start it up, and it says that Windows had a problem (how common) and wanted to know whether i wanted to start it normally, or go into safe mode, or go into the settings that worked last. I chose that one and it appeared to be starting normally, with the XP loading screen but then it just restarts. I tried running a linux live cd but it wont start up. However, in that startup process for the livecd, it did say that the hard drive was "dirty" and to run chdsk in windows. I'm thinking that the only way to solve this is a full format and restore. Is there any other way?
