Microphone Problems

I've recently got a new hard drive in my computer, due to the previous one being faulty

I use a headset an awful lot, but when I tried to plug it in (the proper way) I can only hear sound and not create it (speak)

Naturally, I go into volume control > options > properties > mixer device > HD Audio Front Microphone

I slide the volume for that all the way up, but nothing happens

I also go to the test hardware section, but i slide the volume controls about and nothing happens

At this point im checking every 2 minutes to make sure im not in mute (which im not) and keep testing with windows sound recorder and on counterstrike as well as the chat program ventrilo

Also when i open up volume control there are only 4 options : MasterVolume > Wave > SW Synth > CD Player

But on my old computer I had many more options stretched out, which included controls affecting the microphone volume - But I cant get any of that to appear

Any help people can give me?

How was your operating system reinstalled after the drive change? If it was a fresh install, ensure that all the relevant motherboard drivers, sound card drivers and other related software was also reinstalled.

If that proves OK then the next things I would check would be to ensure that none of the connectors for the microphone have not been dislodged during the replacement of the hard drive - both on the motherboard and on the front panel. The plugs are very easily moved and sometimes it's not easy to see unless you are specifically looking for that problem.
