Won't load logon screen

I'm running WinXP Pro SP2 for about 8 months now. Today I restarted my computer, it showed the Windows logo with the progress bar, then it went black when normally it would load up the Windows Logon screen. The monitor stays on so it is receiving a video signal but it's all black, I can't get past this. If I boot into Safe-Mode, it brings up the logon screen as normal and I can login and see all my files, etc (I'm in safe-mode right now).

I haven't installed any new software in weeks, the last thing I did before the restart was run Ad-Aware and deleted nearly 300 infections. I tried system restore, but I can't get to that logon screen, so it can't complete a restore. Any ideas on what is going on?

Unplugging everything from the computer and plugging it back in seemed to do the trick. Still not sure exactly what the problem was but at least it's over for now.

Well, I bet that was a relief rrover. But it hi-lights the importance of doing regular back-ups to external media (hard-disk, CD or DVD) just in case, as well as having good anti-adware utilities to stop the malware getting in so you don't have to delete it. I recommend Spybot Search and Destroy as well as Ad-Aware.

Also, do you run CheckDisk and Scannow every few weeks? CheckDisk checks your hard-disk for physical errors, and Scannow will check your Windows system files for corruption errors.
