XP connectivity issues

Hi there,

since a while now i am experiencing quiet irregularly (but still annoyingly often) happening connectivity issues on XP (SP2), meaning i can no longer establish a connection to the Internet. This happens usually when i had my computer running for quiet a while, but lately i have seen it happen even after only a few hours. So far the only solution has turned out to be a full reboot, mere relogging does not work. Two things i learned about this.

1. This cannot be a router problem, if i connect a second computer to the router it will connect just fine.

2. This does not effect running connections. E.g. P2P software or online games do not get disconnected, but if i disconnect them they cannot reconnect until i reboot. Note however that the problems happens also when im not running P2P etc.

I would appreciate if somebody could shed some light on this strange problem or even better produce a solution. While it is maybe not a fatal problem, it is however annoying to have to reboot to reconnect to the Internet.

Apologies if this has been answered already. In this case i would be grateful for a referrence. Thank you very much.

I have abandoned all wireless peripherals (Internet, keyboard, mouse) because of poor reliability of the links to my computers.

Everything is wired, iam a bit old fashioned on this. The router is a NetComm NBSPlus4 if that helps, although i believe i had the same problem with my older router, a D-Link DSL-502T. Also, when the problem occurs and i reconnect the network cable i get the yellow exclamation mark in the network icon.

Have you tried the built-in Windows network connection problem-solver, jm17511? When I loose a connection because of a power supply break to the router (quite frequent here in Sri Lanka), it tells me what to do to reset the connection. (I hope I've now solved the power interruption problem by powering it from the UPS, rather than directly from the mains.)

I think i tried that once or twice and it got stuck assigning an IP address after a while it said the connection could not be repaired. But i will try it again next time.
