new dvd-r disk shown as "full"

I just tried to burn a short movie to my dvd-r. U-Lead 7 crashed. I looked at System/hardware and checked with NO DISK in the drive and yet the "disk" was graphed out as totally full. I've been able to burn DVDs before, last time just a few months ago. Don't know what happened but would certainly appreciate some help. Wasn't able find anything of help on a google search. Bummer. Was ready to burn gift/movie of our summer school class for my students.

I have XP home, SP 3, Pentium 4 3.20 GHz, 1 G RAM. The DVD is NEC.

I don't know what "U-Lead 7" is, but if it is your DVD burning software, and it crashed during the burning, then it probably has burned your DVD to death. Get a new DVD.

I believe U-LEAD is a packet writer program. This will use the entire disc and write periodically to the disc, almost like a hard drive.

Packet writing is one of my peeves because it is usually a proprietary thing, and once you make a disc you generally cannot read it on any other computer.

I suggest CDBurnerXP or InfraRecorder

Both are free, and InfraRecorder is OpenSource.

Thanks for the burning software tips. But the problem isn't U-Lead, which is a video editing suite and which has edited and burned acceptably for a few years now. The problem is that the dvd drive, when I check 'properties' is shown to be full, without a dvd disc being in it. My Q is: what glitch is causing my PC to misread an empty disc drive as FULL and how do I restore it to workable condition?

Even my pc shows the dvd drive as full when there is no dvd in it, this is not a problem. A normal cd writer would let you double click on the drive and see its contents even when a cd is not in the drive (in this case it would just be like a disc with no contents in it). Are you able to burn a CD or is it only the dvd writing which has the problem, please try? It could be a problem with your drive.
