Windows xp missing desktop icons, including start menu

Recommended Posts

This is my own fault, but I cannot fix it. I recently downloaded an emulator and game for it. Shortly after unzipping these files, I came under attack from various adware vira. I started to habitually end these programs from my task manager (explorer.exe and iexplore.exe) I was not worried that I may be shutting down explorer, as I use firefox, routinely, after ending these explorer programs, my desktop icons and start bar would disappear (the only thing remaining would be my wallpaper) and I would have to use my task manager to do anything on my computer.

This situation has stayed the same, I am no longer plagued by adware, but even after restarting my computer, I have no desktop, or start bar, this denies me of many windows systems, including control panel, and basically my gui in general, I am forced to browse for programs using task manager.

Help, please and thank you.

EDIT: also, my ad-ware, and anti vira programs absolutely do not detect any threats.

Assuming you are using XP or later, are you able to access System Restore? This is usually done via Help & Support. If you can, try restoring to a time before this disaster happened.

The program is called System Restore. I can't see it in in Task Manager but, I'm not used to accessing programs that way.

I suppose you don't have a full system backup.

You may be able to do a repair installation of your O/S. Do you have a Windows disk?

NO. My person's pc was gifted, and did not come with said disc. I could always google "system restore, .exe" may consume countless hours however, I do have system restore, I recall configuring it upon boredom, but am not able to find it during browsing. Who knows what the folder is called, and my program files system is hug as is.

But system restore will work? Am not worried about losing my emulator, but but have added wealth of obscure media to my system recently.

I don't know if either will work for you, but it's worth looking at.
