Master / Slave Questions

Hello

I have a SATA hard drive on the SATA 1 channel with Vista installed on it. I am trying to put a second hard drive and a CDRW drive on the IDE 1 channel.

I made the hard drive "master" and the CD "slave" but it only detects the hard drive master and not my slave cdrw. When I switch the roles making the cd rw master and the harddrive slave, it only detects the cdrw and not the hdd.

I am using an IDE cable with the longest end in the motherboard, the middle one in the hard drive, and the end in the cd-rw.

If it matters, my bios are called Phoenix awardBIOS.

Do you have the jumpers set correctly on each device?

With IDE, the end connector is MASTER and the middle is SLAVE. Jumper settings should be made to match this or set the jumpers to CS (cable select) where the position of the device on the cable (as previous) will determine which device is master.

Also ensure the cable you are using is 80 conductor. The original IDE cables were 40 conductor and even though there are only 40 (or 39) pins on an IDE connector, the presence of the "spare" conductors is very important for correct functioning of modern IDE (or EIDE) hardware. Having said that, though, 40 conductor cables are quite unusual now.

Count the wires. No need to count them all. If you get to twenty(ish) and you are at about one quarter then you can say it's an 80 wire cable.

I've just had another thought about this. On some IDE devices (I've had it happen to me twice recently). It is possible on some connectors (hard drives in my case) there is space to connect up with the connector moved one pair of pins set awry i.e. to the left or right of the array. Not explained very well but I hope you understand.

The IDE cable was not 80 conductor, but I had one laying around and tried it. I understood what you meant by having the pins a little off, but I made sure the 80 conductor was plugged in perfect. It does not work however. Instead of having just 1 master, it gives me just 1 slave (but the slave is actually what I have set as master. For example, my hdd is set as master but it's showing up as slave in the bios and the cdrw (actual slave) is not detected.

Is it possible that the SATA hdd is making them not detect properly? Would setting both hdd and cdrw to cable select make a difference?

I have been trying to read on this lately and see people saying different things.

Some people say that (when not using CS) the master has to be at the end of the chain. Others say that if you are specifically using Master and Slave jumpers it doesn't matter where they are on the chain.

On my Intel board XP system at home I have two optical drives on the secondary IDE chain and if I put the end device to Master the machine will not boot (from the Primary IDE chain). Once I make the middle device the Master and the end device the Slave it boots from.

If anyone has a clue as to this I'd definitely like to hear feedback.

Using IDE

With Cable Select selected on the devices - the master device is always on the one connector farthest from the motherboard

With Master and Slave selected - the settings of the jumpers on each device (one Master and one Slave) purely determine which device is Master and which is Slave

So then why if I switch which is Master and which is Slave the machine doesn't boot? I guess that's my question. It doesn't matter which drive is in the middle or end. If the drive on the end is Master it doesn't work.

It is very important which end of the cable is inserted into the motherboard - either end will fit, only one is correct.

As -pops- so rightly says above make sure that the motherboard connector is the one which is clearly by itself on the cable, the two "device" connectors are normally close together at the other end.

You may possibly have the cable connected the wrong way round ?

Sorry to dash your hopes but, no, that is not the problem.

Have you tried another cable? with 80 conductors, it is easy for one to go awry.

I think I have but I'm not sure. It would have been a long time ago.

I don't really think it's the cable though because things work perfectly fine. Just in an order that is (for most at least) out of the norm.
