Hey everyone,

I hope someone can help. Since yesterday my computer (XP) froze over 4 times. It starts with a blue screen saying something with "Error" but it disappeares to quick to read any further.

Then the computer just shows a black screen with the computer's brand name (COMPAQ). I have to do a forced restart and during that manually choose 'boot computer'.

Once the computer has fully booted a new message appears stating that the computer recovered from a serious error.

Here is some information I found regarding the kind of error. I am really clueless and fear that this computer (over 5 years old) is 'dying'.

As a first thought try to do a full virus and malware scan just to be sure.( If u can ever be sure that is :) )

If it is clean then perhaps it has to do with your memory..I had a problem like this once...didn't find an exact solution. But then after a clean OS installation it didn't happened again. I don't say do a clean OS installation or go buy new RAM before searching a little bit more...just saying......sorry I couldn't help more.

The error message would be most useful.

In order to stop it disappearing off the screen, press Start - Control Panel - System - Advanced - Start & Recovery Settings. Now UNcheck the box against Automatically Restart, in the System Failure Section.

Next time it fails, write down the error message, including the numbers.

Post the result in this thread and we'll take it from there. ;)

Ok, this computer had now protection whatsoever  . Thank god it's not mine and I am only going to use it for 3 more weeks.

I installed McAfee SecurityCenter and checked for viruses.

The outcome: 2 potentially unwanted programmes called 'Adware-Fuel' and 'Adware-Cometsys'. I removed them both. I did it this morning. Now I guess I can only wait and see if the whole thing crashes again. Thanks, Irene, I changed the setting so that the error screen does not disappear again.

Ok, it happened again. I could read the error screen message. But I don't know if it's really valuable.

It stated something like:

"A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Check if hardware/software is properly installed.

Remove newly installed hardware/software. Disable BIOS memory options.

Technical information:

*STOP: 0x00000050, 0xFF848A8B, 0x00000000, 0x804E73A9, 0x00000000

Begin dump of physical memory.

Dump of physical memory completed."

And after the restart the already known message appears (see pictures in the first posting).

Can somebody understand this? :(

Thanks, Irene. This page seems to be helpful. But I did not dare to try the first resolution method offered as I don't understand what they mean by:

Method 1: Rename the malicious driver by using Internet Explorer

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. In the Address box, type %windir%\system32\drivers, and then press ENTER.

3. Locate the randomly named .sys file, right-click the file, and then select Rename.

Which randomly named .sys file are they talking about?
