Control media over a network

Recommended Posts

I have a computer on a network (over the internet on a VPN), and Im looking for a way to have it play sounds that I can control from another computer.

ie. On my laptop I connect to the remote computer and have a playlist or something where I can select a song, sound file, etc, and then play it over the default audio output device on the remote computer.

Preferably something with a very light front end/protocol so that I can use it over a dialup connection. Is there anything out there like that that anybody knows about?

About VLC media player

VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.

It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

It doesn't need any external codec or program to work.

P.S. I too have dialup, and good luck trying to stream video. even audio is not great.
