Please explain the meaning of update

I remember years ago I bought a 98 upgrade edition. I could do a clean install of 98 as long as I pointed the install to a 95 boot disk as it asked for the location of the existing OS. I am looking at my first try at Vista and want to dual boot not upgrade XP. Is this possible with the upgrade version as it was before or do I have to install XP first and then upgrade it?

Thanks a bunch!

Unfortunately no. You cannot use Windows 98 to install an upgrade version of Vista.

Upgrade copies are not available for versions of Windows earlier than Windows 2000. These earlier versions of Windows require you to install a full copy of Windows Vista.

I thought that the poster wanted to use an XP disk to use an upgrade version of Vista (the same way that 98 could be upgraded with a 95 disk)?

Yes that's it exactly, all it takes is a little reading. Can an upgrade version of Vista be used for a clean install without XP already installed?

Edit:

The cost of the upgrade edition is like $140 for ultimate whereas the standard install edition of ultimate is nearly twice that. Thats why I'm asking.

In a nutshell, the procedure involves booting a PC from the Vista upgrade DVD.

Next, a clean install is performed without the user entering the disc's product key or downloading any patches.

Once this unactivated, trial version of Vista is running, the setup program is launched again — this time from within Vista.

At this point, the "upgrade" option is selected, the product key is entered, and Vista can be activated exactly like the full edition of the product.

Thanks for that! My searches didn't turn up the windows secrets site. I guess it will work after all. I'm still hesitant about moving to Vista. It might be better to just wait for 7 to come out but I need to learn some things about Vista. I am starting to get machines in to work on that have it installed and don't want to turn work away so I thought I would look into it. Thanks again!
