jim44 Posted August 18, 2008 Report Share Posted August 18, 2008 I bought my PC five years ago with Windows XP Home version pre-installed and with no accompanying disc.............. it also had other software already installed. My hard drive has packed up and I will need to install a new hard drive. As I have no CD with XP will I have to purchase a new copy or am I entitled to get a copy by other means? This is no consolation of course, but it is yet another example of a big mistake in accepting a computer without a full installation disc. I have an XP Certificate of Authenticity label with reference numbers on the side of my tower. I wonder if this 'proof' of legal ownership of XP would enable me to get a disk from Microsoft. Although I do believe that PC Makers has to give you a copy of the software that they provide you with, so that you can install it. Maybe they went through the easy option and they put it on the hard drive.Or you could just download a copy, it would not be illegal as you would be using your own legal product key and that is what you actually pay Microsoft for.
