We have connection, and simply pressing the "try again" button works every time. However, it is a real pain.How can I get XP to realize there really is a connection?? y2khardtop Posted September 11, 2008 Author Report Share Posted September 11, 2008 IE8 crashed repeatedly. Uninstalled IE8, IE7, re-installed IE7 and it's still doing it. I just reinstalled Windows 3 weeks ago, and don't really want to do another clean install (although I'm considering going back to Vista again). Again, network/internet is working great, but for some reason Windows doesn't see it unless I hit the "try again" button about 10% of the time. homecomputeraid Posted September 17, 2008 Report Share Posted September 17, 2008 How do you know your internet is working fine?Try an extended ping (go to a command prompt and type ping -t www.nortel.com, or an Internet site of your choosing, and hit Enter). Let it run for quite a while and see if you get timeouts occaisonally.If you do, you might have your ISP check their circuits, or eliminate as many variables as you can, like a router or wireless connection, and trying the extended ping again.You could also try another browser like Firefox if you suspect a browser issue. y2khardtop Posted September 18, 2008 Author Report Share Posted September 18, 2008 hey, thanks for the great advice....been "pinging" a few hours so far with no dropouts.I feel like it is a problem specific to THIS computer, but don't know if it is the wireless adapter, windows in general, or IE specifically. I haven't tried another browser yet (just don't like any of them), but my Antivirus update has never failed, and I've never had any other connection issues (various other software I use, plus FTP usage).will let the Pings go on overnight and see if I get any dropouts.....I don't expect I will. BUT, IE works while I'm pinging, but continues to fail regularly without the pings.I've been running Chrome a few days as well, and am having NO connection issues with Chrome, just IE7. As already mentioned, I have uninstalled IE and reinstalled it several times. Obviously, IE is closely integrated into the OS, so it leaves remnants behind.Anybody know how to COMPLETELY wipe out IE7, and then clean install????? If a IE dll has been damaged you may be able to restore it by running scannow, but you'll need the original Windows XP installation disk. I run IE in a sandbox, and forgot to run a non-sandboxed version the first time and the problem came back (duh). Anyway, running in a REAL IE instance seems to have corrected the problem.
