nickster Posted September 19, 2008 Report Share Posted September 19, 2008 First of all:Win XP on an e-MachinesRealtek sound driver - updated yesterday by way of DrivermaxMy sound was fine until a week ago. I'm getting no sound from Windows. The speakers are plugged in, on, I'm getting line noise and that is all; Device Manager shows nothing wrong with sound; Sound settings in control panel are what they should be, about a week and a half ago I got SP3 from windowsupdate.comDevice manager doesn't indicate anything wrong with sound. It does have a yellow exclamation next to SABKUTIL in Non-plag and play driver. I'm not sure what that is though or if it is causing or part of a conflict wioth sound drivers.I read a suggestion on windowsforum.com to uninstall all things related to sound (players, drivers) and reinstall them. I'm considering this and then checking my settings.It sounds like that should fix it. Once again, I see no indication of a hardware problem.Other suggestions?Thank you. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Did you download the new drivers from the manufactures site or from elsewhere? Can you do a system restore to before this problem occurred, or do you have a full back up in a program like Acronis? If not, maybe someone on here can help to solve the problem. Best of luck. :D The section for updating drivers on the manufacturer's site was down at the time. I used Drivermax to update; the driver was updated, but the problem still exists. I don't have a backup (I know, I know); I don't have personal info on this PC or use it for business in any way (I know a backup is important in any case). I don't have the restore points from before the error occurred; I go into control Panel -> Firewall and delete them because drfragging uses much time to defrag the restore data) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Guess what, came home fafter work, and Realtek audio Manager (which i downloaded about 2 weeks ago, was active with a dialog box prompting me to tell it what port I use for sound; headphones were shown to be current( I have never used headphones, and my speakers are plugged in correctly; I selected line out and ran it's sound test and lo and behold, I have sound.
