Disc cleanup removed too much--help

I ran disc cleanup to free up approx 8 GB on my laptop. This included disc compression. Then I defragged. When I logged on two days later, my wallpaper was gone, and my games file was empty. I don't know what else is missing as of yet. Is there a way to recover or restore from disc cleanup? I tried the restore function, but it kept telling me it could not restore from anytime in the past week's restore points....I do not have a Windows XP Professional CD as my laptop came with Windows installed and my other copy of Windows CD is for my home computer and is the home version. I could not find a repair utility on the laptop, either. I think the disc cleaner wiped out those files, too! Help!!!

I am very sorry that I can't help on this one, but there are TWO important lessons learnt here. NEVER buy a computer which does not include an installation disc, and the other one is to have a plug in hard drive on which to keep regular back ups of a mirror image of your computer. Acronis is a favourite of many on this forum. Best of luck, and I hope that someone CAN help.

Thank you, Andsome,

I have Acronis on my desktop, and I have Windows Home edition on it, along with the disk, but the laptop isn't used that much...

My son-in-law said he might have a copy of Windows pro I can use to repair. I just did not think disk cleanup would have this effect! I have stayed away from registry cleaners just for this reason...Just can't win......dw
