Partition Magic

i recently got a new harddisk for my computer, because i need more storage space...

so i now have a Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB hdd, and a Seagate Barracuda 250GB hdd

the Western Digital is the one im using right now, and the Seagate isnt used at all now: its connected and recognised, but thats all [not even partitioned]

on the WD hdd, i have two partitions: C:, with all my program data and windows on it [the usual] and F:, a partition with all my other data on it [music, movies, etc.]

and this is what i would like to do:

-move my C: partition to the Seagate hdd

-make my F: partition fill up the WD disk

-make the Seagate disk, with the C:, the primary disk, so my pc will use that to boot from [i dont know if that is done automatically]

-make the F: not primary, so that wont cause any errors

i tried doing this with Norton Partition Magic [is that where the topic title comes from :lol:] [ofcourse without actually applying the settings]:

-move my C: partition to the Seagate disk: success

-make my F: partition fill up the WD disk: failure >> when i do that, i see that the F: partition is part of the Extended part of the hdd [because i used to have the C: partition on it]; and a small amound of space is left for the not-extended partition [which will be called H:]

now i could merge H: and F:, but then F: will become a folder inside H:, which i do not want to happen >> a lot of programs use files from the F: directories

-make the Seagate with the C: partition, primary: failure: i cant seem to do this... the options simply arent available... [the checkboxes for "primary partition" or "logical partition" are "hidden" [grey] so only 1 option is possible]

-make the F: not primary: failure >> read the line above ^^

so my question is:

how would you do this, or do you know how i can make the last steps from my plan? [using Norton Partition Magic]

btw: yes i know, Norton is the devil amongst "protection" software, but the Partition Magic software is just great [even though it might be a little old]

That's an challenging task, Coreper, and I've no idea if there's a way to do this. However glancing through a Partition Magic forum (http://www.techsupportforum.com/microsoft-...tion-magic.html it seems it would be a disaster if you tried (e.g. thousands of registry paths pointing to a different location).

But someone with your experience should be able to do it starting from scratch with a re-install.

I agree that Partition Magic is, well, magic. On simple partitioning tasks I've never had any problems. Interestingly Norton are only the owners, not the original developers, which explains why it works OK (like Sygate firewall, also owned by Norton, but not developed by them).

However, as with other products (like Nero) there's now a tendency to load in extra unwanted junk with the package.

I have used (the original PowerQuest) Partition Magic 8 for many years, and I have found that almost anything is possible. I have moved partitions from one drive to another, swapped partitions, etc. It needs a little bit trying sometimes, and also looking up Help may help sometimes.

As for your specific problem, you cannot make your C: partition 'Primary', as it is already primary. Some for F: - it is already logical.

i just had too look a bit further, and figured out it actually was possible with partition magic...

btw: about the registry items: that wont change a bit, since the C: and F: partitions will still exist... > it doesnt make a difference for windows :)

i tried it with Partition Magic, and it worked perfectly, this is how i did it:

-Start Norton Partition Magic

-Move the C: partition to disk 2

-Resize partition C: to the same size of the disk

-Convert the F: partition to a Primary partition

-Resize partition F: to the same size of the disk

-Apply changes

-Reboot and let Norton Partition Magic apply its magic

since the C: partition now is on disk 2, i would like to have it on disk 1, so this is how i fixed that:

-Shutdown your pc

-Move the SATA connector from disk 2 to SATA slot 1, and the SATA connector from disk 1 to the slot from disk 2 [or any other, i dont think it matters]

-Start your pc

-Done!

*i dont know if you need to have the disk with the C: [windows] partition as disk 1, to be able of starting windows, but i wanted it this way :D

and i gotta say: it was definitly worth it! >> my new harddisk is very very very silent!
