tom bombadil Posted November 25, 2008 Report Share Posted November 25, 2008 Hi all, I STUPIDLY managed to move the boot loader for windows xp to my private USB HDD from my work owned laptop.In an effort to have my own OS to use at home I stuffed up my work laptop installing linux. Now when I try to load my work laptop with the USB HDD not attached I get a linux grub error message. My windows laptop will still boot if I have the usb HDD attached.Can anyone help me before I get skinned alive by my corporate(no sense of humour) collegues tomorrow?I partitioned the USB HDD in the following way:/BOOT 15 G/ 15G/HOME 100G/SWAP 2G/WINDOWS partition 15Gi made great efforts not to touch the internal HDD but somehow the boot loader got moved to the EXTERNAL HDD :-((Is there any quick and easy way to roll back? Seshomaru Samma Posted November 26, 2008 Report Share Posted November 26, 2008 I'm not sure what you did (an output of fdisk -l on linux would help)the quickest fix to get windows running again is to run fixmbr from a windows install disc boot from the windows cd choose recovery and run this command :fixmbryou can do it from a linux live cd but it's much more complex ,notice that by running fixmbr that you will overwrite grub and will not be able to boot linuxto boot linux you will need to reinstall grub later or get windows' bootloader to recognise linux (possible but very difficult) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
