Hb_Kai
It may be an issue with an overload of programs running on your start-up. Do you have a lot of stuff automatically running when you log on?
rogervansteeden
He tells me that he doesnt have a lot of startup programmes ,but his antivirus was switched off when i went into his Cmos settings could it be a virus? Hb_Kai
I've never came across viruses that stop you from logging in myself, but to be honest with you, I don't know. Getting viruses all depend on what you do with the internet. Does your friend download movies, music, games and whatever else? Does he go on dodgy internet sites? Has he ever had a problem with malware/viruses or any other malicious software before in the past because it may have not removed properly. If none of these then I really don't know.If you can log on to Safe Mode, then run a virus scanner, and maybe a malware/spyware program and see what comes up.EDIT: - Or it may be a registry error
Boris
He tells me that he doesnt have a lot of startup programmes ,but his antivirus was switched off when i went into his Cmos settings could it be a virus? The virus option in CMOS (BIOS) does not control whether his "proper" anti-virus works or not. Some M/B's come with a BIOS Anti-Virus function which if enabled prevents a Boot Sector virus being written.
rogervansteeden
should i go back and disable the virus in the cmos settings then

Boris
OK - I was a bit confused by the question mark in the post :)I suggest you try a repair installation of XP. See this guide for full details :-http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/repair_...lation_xp.shtmlYou will need a proper XP CD - not a "Recovery Disk to go through the process. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
It wont boot in Safe mode? How does it not boot into Safe Mode? Does the Safe Mode menu come up when tapping the F8 key?
Hb_Kai
What do i do if a windows repair doesnt workDo you know the date of when your friend had this problem first? You can boot the PC as a CMD prompt and enter the System Restore option from there, choosing the date before this problem began to occur should/maybe fix the problem. If that doesn't work then you may have to re install the Operating System. To do this...Restart your computer, and then press and hold F8 during the initial startup to start your computer in safe mode with a Command prompt.Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode with a Command prompt option. If you are prompted to select an operating system, use the arrow keys to select the appropriate operating system for your computer, and then press ENTER.Log on as an administrator or with an account that has administrator credentials. At the command prompt, type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe, and then press ENTER.Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to a functional state. Can Safe Mode be disabled without a user choosing to do so? rogervansteeden
I tried 5 times tapping f8 and holding it down but it would not load into safe mode,we actually scanned the hard disk for any errors that performed ok but when he typed in his password loading your settings came up but it paused and didnt go to desktop screen.I am reluctant to format his hard disk even though everything is backed up on an external drive he would lose some information and have to download all new drivers, also he uses his pc for his business
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
You have to start tapping the F8 key immediately after any BIOS messages, before Windows starts loading. You will have very much more options if you can boot into Safe Mode. Hb_Kai
Keep trying what Pat suggested, if this really doesn't work you could try plugging the hard drive in to another computer, setting it as a Slave hard drive and checking it that way for viruses and anything, or error checking it. rogervansteeden
i tried to tap f8 before windows starts but safe mode will not start
rogervansteeden
Finally i got into safe mode and we are currently doing a thorough virus scan and already found at least 2 trojans, for some reason his Mcaffe was switched off,However i think im gonna have to format the hard drive. He has a 500 gb external hard drive so everything is backed up im hoping this will sort out the problem unless the trojan has caused a hardware problem, other than that i dont know what to do next.
