montooner Posted March 15, 2009 Report Share Posted March 15, 2009 I want to telnet into my laptop, but it's refusing to let me connect. I seem to understand the syntax; I can telnet into my Android g1 just fine.I tried two servers on my laptop, using two different clients. My two servers: 1) builtin windows xp professional tlntsrv.exe on port 23, 2) open source KpyM Telnet/SSH on port 2323. My two clients: 1) ubuntu desktop 2) cell phone.The builtin tlntsrv.exe gives the most interesting clues:1) after typing in the proper login/pw, i get: Failure in initializing the telnet session. Shell process may not have been launched.Telnet Server has closed the connectionConnection closed by foreign host2) So I try to turn on Telnet using services.msc, which returns this alert box:The Telnet service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts Service.3) I look around, and there seems to be some dependencies. I have RPC and secondary logon services on.The KpyM server just tells me that I have bad login info; I assume I'm getting the wrong login, or they're using windows tlntsrv and they're losing some of the error message when they pass tlntsrv's message to me. Neither case helps me.No one else seems to be having quite as much trouble as I have. Could I be mistaking my login? It's just "DOMAIN\USERNAME"\\"pw", ya? What telnet client are you using? Using the standard Windows telnet, I type open hostname and then I get prompted for userid and password. Hb_Kai Posted March 16, 2009 Report Share Posted March 16, 2009 There is, if you fancy a change, software very similar to Telnet called PuTTy (not sure if the capitals are correct but Putty basically), so if this problem seems to be a Telnet software issue you can always change to this.Putty also encrypts everything so it's more safe than Windows and just about as good as Putty.Sorry, I don't know anything else to help.
