shokan Posted March 20, 2009 Report Share Posted March 20, 2009 I just did a full install of XP Pro SP2 on a Dell laptop Inspiron 8000. I used a CD-ROM in a modular bay where the floppy used to be. The original CD-ROM is busted. I changed the order of BIOS checking to be CD first, which is how I did the install. I then changed the boot order to be Internal HDD as first in line. I rebooted and all I ever get is a black screen (after the Dell splash screen) with the message "Fixed optical drive not found". Just in case, I then changed all three boot devices to Internal HDD. Nope, same result. I know XP is on the HDD; it went through the whole install perfectly. But when it rebooted, without the Xp disk in, I got the sequence of Dell screen then Fixed optical not found. But, the problem is, the new CD-ROM is in the floppy slot now (the only place it fits) and is how I am able to install XP as far as I've gotten. Can I swap the CD-ROM drive at this stage of setup with the floppy drive and install the RAID drivers then put the CD-ROM drive back in the floppy slot to resume the setup with the XP CD?
