No Sound

Recommended Posts

Hi all. A friend of mine phoned to say he had lost the sound on his computer so I did a bit of fishing around and learned that I should look in the Device Manager to see if there were any yellow question marks next to the headings in the sound tab & delete them. Then when booting up next time the computer would look for the appropriate driver and prompt a download. That said I did find two such question makes but they would not delete so it's over to you experts to advise please. Regards DD :excl:

You do not actually delete them, if you right click the item with the question mark against it then left click uninstall, then do the same with the other question marked item, then reboot and it will detect the items and install the new drivers.

It will ask you if you want to go on the net to find the drivers, if it does not find them it will ask you to insert a disk with the appropriate drivers on it.

Hello Alan.....glad to make your acquaintance & thanks for the response. It is a while since I visited my friend's house so- my memory not being what it should be- I can't quite remember whether I actually right or left clicked the items with the yellow question marks next to them. So, with your straight forward directions in front of me I will copy and paste them into an email and send it to the IN box of the malfunctioning computer. Though I am not the sharpest knife in the box by any means I suspect my friend would rather leave the adjustments to me so I will phone him and see if he was given any discs with the computer when he bought it. In the event that he does not have any discs and no drivers are found at boot up, what is the next step please? I was told that "Driver Max" is a good web site to access to search for and download most drivers but what is your opinion Alan ? DD

What is the Windows version in question?

What are the device drivers with the yellow question marks, and what are the error codes show in the Properties?

Drivermax can help a great deal with finding newer drivers, but it cannot do much with faulty / incorrectly installed drivers.

Hi Pat from Tokyo. Doesn't sound very much like a Japanese name!!! Glad to make your acquaintance also as I am new here, just got on board. Unfortunately I am not aware of Kinshasa's computer details but I could easy pop down and find out as he only lives 15 minute walk away. The bit I do know is XP 2003 is the windows version with perhaps SP2 as judging by his lack of enthusiasm when I mention things like Shields-up; Secunia; Belarc Advisor; CCleaner & the like, he doesn't show much interest & more than likely has not download SP3. Will send feed back after I have made another visit. Thanks DD

Hi Dave.Dee; does my name sound more Japanese if I print it like this ヴィレネル・パット ?

When you visit your friend, check if the devices with the yellow exclamation mark have a 'Troubleshooting' button (under Properties). This may help you clear the error.

I do not understand this question...?

Hi Pat Being so close to April 1st could suggest it was a wind up but in fact in my reply between the words "to type" & "a post" I had typed *[*/*quote*]* without the asterisks. All I can think is the software deleted it because it conflicts with the prog which (judging by your reply) looks for the word "quote preceded with a forward slash" enclosed with [ ] both at the beginning and end of the post. Is there some tutorial that explains why this principle has been introduced? DD

Sorry, but I also do not understand what you mean by this - could you please explain what you mean by "what is the purpose of having to type with a post" ?

Hi Boris ....post number 9 explains the misunderstanding it has to do with the need to start and end a post with the word "quote" preceded with a forward slash and enclosed with brackets..... Regards DD

Ah - you mean the BBcode tags. You don't have to use/type any of these. Depending on which 'Reply' button you use, the board will quote the previous post, putting it into 'quote' tags. You shouldn't have to modify any of these.

For more information on BBcode, click on the 'BB Code Help' button under the posting window.
