win xp reboot loop

Hi,

after my last automatic update of win xp my computer logs in to windows und reboots by himself all over. Nothing to do.

I already logged in in the safe mode and uninstalled the updates, but still he's in a rebooting loop.

Any hints?

I am also having the same issue. I have a number of machines in my office all HP dx2400 (and variants) all using Windows XP SP3. All the PC's are built the same way by me (not using imaging software)

Over the past 3 weeks random PC's have decided to reboot on their own accord just after the user has logged in. There is nothing in the event log to tell me there are any issues, and sometimes when you log on as the local administrator you get a pop up box telling me the PC has recovered from a serious faliure.

I have tried uninstalling and installing our Symantec Anti-virus, in safe mode going into "Last know working settings" (or words to that effect) and system restore to an earlier time.

I have run anti virus scans, webroot scans, malware scans etc... and they have all come back as clean. I have even rebuilt some machines from scratch, and installed all the updates and still the same issue.

I have noticed a small hint of a pattern, it might be possible that the genuine advantage tool might be causing the PC's to reboot as this downloads as an automatic update after all the windows updates have been manualy installed, and when users shut down their PC's at night they are given the option to "Install Updates then shut down".

Are there any other users out there with a similar issue?

When this happens the first thing is to look in Event Viewer from Administrative Tools in Control Panel. This will indicate the time & immediate cause of this event. After that you have to start investigating further.

Rebooting of this sort is usually occurs after a system crash of some sort as Windows is set by default to re-boot in the event of a system failure Often the cause is something quite simple, like Windows trying to initiate a program that has been uninstalled, not installed properly or has become corrupt.

There have been quite a lot of complaints in the past about Windows Genuine Advantage Tool (SEE HERE), but Microsoft are supposed to have sorted this out.

I searched all over and finally I found other people with my problem. My computer just reboots every time it starts and it began after April 12th since if I restore to a date before it doesn't happen. At first I thought it was Windows Update so I turned that off yesterday but the same problem this morning. I believe it might just be an update from some other application that is running but I can't figure out which one. Surprisingly, it only happens with my OCZ Vertex boot drive but if I switch over to my VelociRaptor boot drive it doesn't happen. The Vertex was completely stable before this and there is nothing on the OCZ forums but I just can't isolate what is causing it.

Can you boot into Safe Mode, then check the event logs from there?
