Make Windows PC mount as external drive

Recommended Posts

Hello Fellow computer fans:

I have a iomega 4drive NAS server box running Windows Server 2003. long story short i need to reformat the drives and re-arrange the RAID setup for the machine but i need to make a "carbon copy" of the partition containing the windows OS, put it on a external drive then once all the configuration is done, load the OS back on the system.

in the macintosh realm there is a feature called "Target Disk Mode" where one can mount an entire macintosh system as a really big external harddrive and mess with the files directly as if they where in an enclosure. it connects through firewire. does this functionality exist in the windows arena? can i use an ethernet or USB cable instead of the firewire because the server does not have firewire.

or even if there is a better way to go about saving the OS let me know.

thanks for your time and help in advance!
