I've just purchased a new laptop and removed the hard drive from my old one.

The older hard drive is now in a caddy to transfer. It has a paid for windows on it and my new laptop has a trial version -

My question is, is it possible to transfer the actual windows software?

Well, I think you could copy it, but it wouldn't be accepted by Microsoft as genuine for updates, service packs, etc. You can only do a transfer properly if you have the original installation disk.

But I think you could run Windows from the caddy, surely?

By the way what's a "trial version" of Windows?

Hello

I should have said 'trial verson of Office' ... at one time PC's came with Office installed .... now Mr.Gates let's yopu use it fot a short time before you pay.

Although it is all on the caddy (Drive 'D'), access to windows is is via the start facility (Drive 'C').

It's a bit cheecky because I have bought and paid the the previous one.

You might want to do a google search on "transferring files and programs."

I had a free program that would extract programs from one computer and then reinstall them on another. I can't remember the name of it, but it worked quite well, and I believe I was able to transfer Office.

good luck.

As I wrote earlier, you can't legally transfer a Microsoft operating system from one piece of hardware to another without using the genuine installation disk. You don't need to transfer Office because it's already on the new laptop. But I'm puzzled, what operating system is installed on the new laptop?

Anyway, you should be able to run Windows from the hard disk in the caddy. It won't be labelled C drive, but that shouldn't matter. Have you tried it yet?

Windows has its own excellent files & settings transfer wizard, so you shouldn't need any 3rd party software.
