HP dvd840 won't burn

My father-in-law's dvd/cd burner has quit burning. As far as I know it still reads cds and dvds, but when trying to burn it always exit with an error. I've tried using a firmware update from HP's website, but it doesn't work. The only one that is available is is for the dvd840i model, which is supposed to work for the other models. This one only says dvd840 on the front, but in the hardware profile it says dvd840x. My last resort will be to do a fresh Windows install, but I wanted to see if anybody had any suggestions before I did that.

I've tried different burning software: Windows Media Player, Windows' burning wizard, some freeware software, and Nero.

If the burner is consistently failing (i.e. most/all disks failing) then a tracking error (as in the Nero report) probably indicates a fault in the mechanism in the DVD writer.

New DVD writers are not expensive.
