I have a blue screen error - 'Windows protection error - you neeed to restart your computer'.

If restarted it runs OK in safe mode, giving full access to files etc, but can only get files out on floppies.

Many applications cannot be started because winspool driver is absent.

Can anyone give me any advice please? Is there any way to recover from this.

If I try to reload windows will I lose all files?

Are you sure that Winspool is the cause of some of your problems, as all that driver does is send print jobs to Network Shared Printers or to LPT ports.

From my memories of ME, it has system restore which can be accessed from safe mode, have you tried that ?.

Yes but there was only 1 restore point available from a couple of days earlier and it made no difference. Re winspool message - yes it seems strange that a command to open most application files results in an immediate requirement for the winspool driver but that is what happens. It would seem to me that there is a corruption in the windows files and I will have to try a drive format and reload of windows from my original cd, and put up with losing a lot of data which I can't get out by floppies.

Any otgher ideas anyone?

I never had Windows ME, but it's not much different from Windows 98. I remember that Windows 9x was really very easy to reinstall, especially a Verify (repair) install.

In Windows 98 there was a tool called 'Batch98', which created a batch setup script for easy reinstallation. You just changed (under [setup]) Verify=1 to specify a repair install.

So I recommend a repair install in that manner; I'm pretty sure that ME has the same tools as 98.
