Cloned disk does not boot alone w/o source

Hello,

I have a bizarre problem and don't know if it is 'real' or an 'apparition'.

I cloned a small boot system disk into a larger disk on the same machine [No hardware or other difference].

The problem:

The system would not boot up off of the cloned disk unless the clone source is installed in the machine. And when this is the case, the clone drive is always Drive (D)

Is this to be expected on all cloned system boot drive?

If you want to boot a cloned disk, it must have the same drive letter as the original source disk. There are thousands of references to that original disk (e.g. C:), so it must be the same drive letter.

Easiest to achieve by using hidden partitions.

I thought of that and tried changing it to C, with the Disk Management tools, but that is already in use by any other boot disk that I have to use in booting up, any suggestions?

How did you clone the drive? There is more to cloning than a straightforward copy. You need Boot INI files and MBR to enable the clone to boot up - and these aren't normally transferred without them being specifically loaded.

Have a look at XXclone for a way to make a bootable copy of your hard drive which will replace your current "C" drive.
